BENEFITS OF
SORGHUM
You have many bacteria in your body. In fact, you have more of them than you have
cells. Most are good for you. The ones found in your gut not only help you to digest
foods, but they also work to protect you against disease and boost both your
physical and mental health and wellness.
Your gut microbiome is the home base for the bacteria in your digestive tract. Our
microbiome helps you to
break down food
, turn nutrients into things that your body
can use,
produce vitamins
,
regulate hormones
and
metabolism
and
excrete toxins.
microbiome
In the gut microbiome, the “good” bacteria do more than just help with
digestion. They help keep your “bad” bacteria in check. They multiply
so often that the unhealthy kind don't have space to grow. When you
have a healthy balance of bacteria in your gut, it’s called equilibrium.
THE FRIENDLY BACTERIA
However, you need help in balancing the friendly bacteria in your
digestive system and that’s where a probiotic (live microorganisms)
can help. Probiotics ‘feed’ our microbiomes and aid digestion.
PROBIOTIC
Here at Insane Grain, we have worked with a biotech lab to introduce a
probiotic (called Bacillus Coagulans) to our snacks. Most probiotics do
not survive the high production temperatures used in our cooking
process, but we have found one which not only does but is also Vegan
Society approved (most probiotics are not vegan)!

Sorghum IS
A HIGH ANTIOXIDANT FOOD
Sorghum supergrains
are an absolute
nutritional powerhouse!
We have been working with
a biotech lab in order to
produce a snack that will
blow your mind
–
nutrient rich
AND good for your gut!
Being ‘nutrient-dense,’ our snacks are filled with all of these amazing nutrients
rather than being empty calories. Sorghum supergrains have been around for
centuries and eaten by those in the Eastern world in order to sustain their energy and
keep them fuelled for the day. For example, women in the rural villages in India
would often grind sorghum into their morning porridge before walking hours to
collect water from the wells! Insane.
A scientific test called ORAC (which stands for Oxygen Radical
Absorbance Capacity for those geeks out there) was a method
used to measure the antioxidant capacities of foods around the
world. Sorghum was found to be in the top 5 (ahead of turmeric,
acai berries, goji berries apples, dates, cranberries, dark
chocolate etc.!)
Sorghum contains B-vitamins, which helps the body
build new tissues and cells, as well as potassium and
phosphorous. Sorghum also contains traces of zinc,
copper and over 20 micronutrients.
1.5x more iron than spinach*
(*weight for weight).
Over ¾ the potassium of a
banana* (*weight for weight).
High in potassium and low in
sodium, sorghum grain promotes
healthy blood pressure.
Gluten is a protein component found in wheat and
barley-based foods, and is believed to cause digestive
problems such as bloating, pain and stomach cramps.
Jowar, a gluten-free whole grain, is considered an
excellent alternative for people who suffer from
‘gluten intolerance.‘
Compared to other cereal grains like
barley or rice, sorghum contains a
much higher concentration of fibre.
Sorghum contains Niacin, also known as Vitamin B3,
which helps turn food into energy for the body.
Vitamin B3 metabolizes nutrients and helps maintain
energy levels throughout the day.
Because it contains high levels of
magnesium, jowar helps maintain
calcium levels in the body (magnesi
